Residential Water Treatments - Why Use Water Filters For Drinking Water

The best alternative for both bottled and tap water is to process it using water filters. These filters remove toxic contaminants than any other purification methods.

Water filters are exclusively designed to work with municipally treated water. The water they produce is not subjected to the phthalate contamination (Phthalates are the most used plasticizers in industrial products), and they also remove cryptosporidium causing a diarrhoeal illness called cryptosporidiosis from drinking water, a feat that neither municipal water treatment plants nor bottler companies have yet managed.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

Due to numerous issues bottled water, is clearly not a healthy substitute to tap water. Bottled water products are expensive when compared to the cost per gallon of tap water. If one is choosing only between tap and bottled water, tap is plainly the more economical, and, in many cases, the healthier choice. Drinking filtered is a much more economical practice than drinking bottled ones. The filtering cost of pure water filter treated is a little more than untreated tap water.

Furthermore, because water filters use no more energy than is already required to force water through a home's plumbing system, they circumvent several of the environmental problems of the bottled water industry. Below we will discuss reasons to use water filters.

Water Treatment - Ten Reasons to Use Water Filter

1. In order to take advantage of the health benefits, it is essential to draw from a clean source of water.

2. According to the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), lead in drinking water contributes to 480,000 cases of learning disorders in children each year in the United States alone.

3. Drinking adulterated, contaminated drink helps in primary reason of epidemic diseases in developing countries.

4. There are more than twenty-one known drinking water contaminants that may be present in tap water, including several known toxins.

5. Bottled drinks does not offer a viable substitute to tap.

6. Municipal treatment services cannot always control for the outbreak of dangerous bacterial contaminants in tap water.

7. The only way to make sure that it is clean, contaminant-free drinking water is through the use of a point-of-use filtration system.

8. For a child's proper mental and physical development, clean, healthy drinking water is necessary.

9. A pregnant woman should always drink lead free pure water as lead can cause severe birth defects in newborns.

10. Numerous kinds of cancer can be endorsed to the presence of toxic materials in drinking water.

Water Quality - How Are Drinking Water Quality Standards Determined?

How are drinking water quality standards determined? This article discusses what type of person is kept in mind when establishing how much of each contaminant is "safe" when ingested.

water cooler

To determine maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) and drinking water quality standards, the government and it's agencies establish a level that "safe" for a 175-pound adult. They also assume that the contaminant in question is the only one that's present in the water.

WATER

But it's clearly been proven that there's usually more than one contaminant found in a glass of tap water. In fact, 90% of all public tap systems contain traces of at least 10 synthetic chemicals and lead. Now this doesn't mean that every single glass of water you drink contains all of these contaminants, but it's certainly possible and it could happen.

One of the fuzzy areas when determining drinking water quality standards is determining how safe synthetic chemicals are when consumed. They do their best to determine the levels that individual chemical is safe at. But they fail to take into account when multiple chemicals come into contact with each other. When this happens, compounds are created that are exponentially more dangerous.

For example, when many synthetic chemicals react with chlorine (the major disinfectant used is treatment plants), they can form compounds called THMs that are highly dangerous and even carcinogenic! And what's worse is these kind of compounds aren't removed in most treatment plants!

One of the other major flaws of current drinking water quality standards is that MCLs are way too high for children. Since there immune and defense system is not fully developed yet, they are much more vulnerable to adverse health effects from drinking water contamination. Plus, they absorb 3 times as much water per pound of body weight than humans do, which means they get much bigger doses of contaminants.

If you're concerned like I am about drinking water quality standards, you can take matters into your own hands and install a simple water filtration system in your home. After much comparison and research, I invested in one that only cost 0 and it removes over 99% of most contaminants found in water. It hooks right to my kitchen sink, and it costs roughly 9 cents to filter a whole gallon of water. I use to spend a month on bottled water for my whole family, so pennies a day is a bargain for me!

But more importantly, I can set my own drinking water quality standards and assure that all the water my family and I drink is safe, pure, and healthy. And in my opinion, it's the only way to guarantee the quality of drinking water.

Common Drinking Water Treatment Methods

Drinking water treatment varies from area to area, but there are a few basic steps that most modern treatment entails. The water goes through several steps of filtration and chemical enhancement. Some chemicals are used to take out the larger particles from the water, binding them to other particles so they can be filtered out later. Other chemicals are added to kill some of the bacteria that cause some types of drinking water contamination.

water cooler

Unless the water comes from a well, any water that reaches the public supplies is required to be treated with chlorine. By the time it reaches the public, it has also been treated with aluminum sulfate and lime, among other chemicals. Some of these chemicals do remain in the water in some small quantity.

WATER

Bottled water generally has a different drinking water treatment that it must undergo. Some bottled water is spring water and some is simply municipal tap water. Wherever the water came from, it is generally distilled to make it more pure. This removes the essential minerals from it and can change the taste.

The treatment of any water must end in a result that can pass EPA tests. The guidelines are set up to allow a small amount of many harmful substances. Some municipalities have stricter guidelines that the EPA requires, but most are simply trying to stay within those set guidelines. If there are known to be toxic substances in the supply that there are no EPA requirements for, those substances are generally not tested for and are not treated.

There is another layer of protection from drinking water contamination that many people use at home. Filters for the home come in several different types, including those that filter all water coming into the house. Those filters can remove contaminants that are still present after the preliminary municipal treatment.

Some use filters on their kitchen faucets to filter the drinking water or a shower filter for bathing. These usually use carbon as a natural filter material to remove chlorine and other chemicals that make up many of the drinking water contamination. Some also pair carbon with sub micron filtration and other effective methods of filtration. This type of drinking water treatment is effective for taking out many contaminants that would have otherwise reached the people in the household.

There are so many different types of drinking water contamination that most municipal treatment plants can't possibly keep up with them all. New ones are constantly being introduced as the landscape and population changes. When one type is mostly filtered out, another enters the local water supply. This has led to more and more of the public using their own filters as their own drinking water treatment.

Do You Know the Benefits of Drinking Water?

Let's face it. I guess we all know that a 5% drop in body fluids causes a 25-30% energy loss in an average adult. But do you know that a 15% drop in body fluid is dangerous enough to cause death? Yes - this is correct and has been medically proven. This itself shows how important these body fluids are and what really is the importance and benefits of drinking water. Let me elaborate more.

water table

The way human body has been designed, it works primarily on water and minerals. The body itself is made up of 70% water. The blood is more than 80%, the brain more than 75%, and the liver is an amazing 96% water! The life-giving and healing processes that happen within our body (like - constant regeneration of skin, bones, hair, nails, damaged nerves, organic lining) is all driven by water.

WATER

To understand the benefits of drinking water, the basic fact that needs to be remembered is - the human body needs to stay well hydrated to operate at its best. Water is beneficial not only for ensuring efficient functioning of the body, but also for avoiding many health ailments like headaches, arthritis, hypertension, asthma etc.

Considering the fact that our brain tissue is actually 85% water, it is not difficult to conclude that water is essential for the optimum functioning of the brain. Lower content of water in body results into dehydration which reduces the level of energy generated in the brain. Studies have shown that with prolonged dehydration, brain cells actually begin to shrink.

Another thing to add in the long list of benefits of drinking water is removal of toxins from the body. Water is the body's only way to flush out toxins and wastes. Most of the degenerative diseases are the results of toxins getting accumulated in the body. Drinking ample amount of water allows the body to constantly purify itself and avoid all sort of health problems.

Now that you know the benefits of drinking water, it becomes obvious that the water we consume has to be pure and 100% safe. How to ensure the same? Understanding that the water coming out from your faucet is full of chemicals and contaminants, my recommendation is to have an in-home water purifier system.

Again, do not go for the ones which work on the principle of reverse osmosis and thereby de-mineralize the water. These minerals are essential for your body. So, look out for a water filter which simply removes the chemicals and contaminants from the water and keeps the minerals intact.

The benefits of drinking water are numerous and crucial. The complete health of you and your family depends on this. Make a move, find out a good water purifier and ensure pure drinking water today.

Pure Drinking Water - The Benefits of Drinking Water

If you had to determine the one change you could make to improve your health and your well-being greatly, what do you think it would be? You might say eating better or exercising more. And those things clearly do have a role in improving your health. However, the most important thing you can do is to increase your intake of pure drinking water.

water pump

You might be surprised at the large number of health benefits associated with pure drinking water. Below are just a few.

WATER

Increased Energy

When you feel sluggish, you might not just be suffering from a lack of sleep. Mild dehydration can cause significant energy loss even in otherwise healthy people. You don't have to be sweltering in the hot desert sun to dehydrate either. If your water levels drop by just 5%, you'll lose one-fourth or more of your energy. That's because the liver, which converts fat into energy, needs that water to do its job effectively.

Boosted Metabolism

We are a nation of people who either need to or are trying to lose weight. Obviously, good hydration is important while we're exercising and having the energy for that exercise requires a lot of pure drinking water but that's not the only role water plays.

Water is necessary for proper digestion. It allows the body to effectively use the nutrients, minerals, and vitamins that are in the food we eat. However, it also improves our metabolism. A healthy metabolism will help us maintain our body weight and can help us drop pounds faster.

Improved Detoxification

Our bodies take in a lot of things it doesn't need. Some of these things aren't good for us and need to be removed. Thankfully, our bodies have a built-in system for excreting these unwanted toxins and chemicals. When we go to the bathroom, anything that shouldn't be in our bodies comes out.

Our excretory systems need water to work. If your hydration levels drop even a little, you can become constipated or have trouble urinating. That means you'll have great difficulty getting rid of any of those toxins or other unwanted things in our bodies. A steady supply of pure drinking water is the best prevention against those types of problems.

Reduced Cancer Risk

The key to these health benefits is pure drinking water. Unfortunately, that might not be available from your tap or even from the bottles lining the shelves. Most of the water that comes into our homes today contains chemicals we would not want in our bodies, including lead and a wide assortment of prescriptions. Studies of our water supply have found that it contains more than 2,000 chemicals that have been linked to cancer. One of those chemicals is the very chlorine most of our ancient water treatment facilities still use to "clean" the water we get from our taps. And because there are no government regulations on bottled water you simply don't know what you're getting.

If you have access to pure drinking water, possibly from a home purifier, you can not only reap the positive rewards of good hydration but avoid the increased risk of cancer.

Homemade Water Filtration Systems - It's Good For Pet Fish But Not For Safe Drinking Water

Can you build effective homemade water filtration systems? Well, that all depends on your purpose.

If you want to keep your fish tank clean there are some acceptable homemade water filtration systems, but of course you have to buy the parts, which could cost as much as buying a ready-built unit. You would still need a standard aquarium power head and a submersible water pump.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

You would also have to find a place that sells activated carbon in a bag. That might be kind of hard to find. Personally, I think the fish would be safer if you just bought a professional system.

Some people have constructed homemade water filtration systems for their outdoor ponds. You would need a plastic trash can with a lid, similar in height to the depth of your pond. You would again need to purchase some type of filtering material depending on the quality of your source water.

Once again, a waterproof pump would be required and piping. If not installed correctly, you risk electrocution. Ponds require aerating, as well as filtering in order to prevent stagnations. So, professional products may be a better choice than homemade water filtration systems for your pond.

Homemade water filtration systems are definitely not the right choice for safe drinking water. The technology is simply too complex.

There is a simple little science project that you can do with your kids, maybe on a rainy summer day, but I would not let them drink the result. There are diagrams for these projects all over the internet, so I'll leave out the details. But, it might give them an idea of how your kitchen counter filter works and you can give them this explanation.

Unlike homemade water filtration systems, our kitchen purifier has a lot of different steps inside. You know the cartridges that I replace every so often? Well, they remove things that we cannot see. We saw the dirt in that water, but not the chemicals and other things that can hurt us.

There could be bug spray, weed killer and tiny little germs that could make you sick. Homemade water filtration systems can't get rid of those things, so
I bought this nice one and now I know that you guys are safe.

For the adults, the number of steps in a system depends on which product that you buy. Most systems include an activated carbon step that removes most of the chlorine, which is put in at the treatment facilities to disinfect and prevent algae growth in the pipes.

In the better systems, there are multi-media blocks that remove VOCs, pesticides, herbicides and industrial pollutants through a process called adsorption. The best systems will also include a micron particle filter that removes microscopic sediments, cryptosporidium and giardia cysts.

They also include and ion exchange phase that removes lead ions and replaces them with potassium, so your water is safe and has a pleasant healthy taste.

That completes today's lesson on homemade water filtration systems. Hope you learned something.

Drinking Water Treatment Systems - Do Not Put Yourself at Risk

Drinking water treatment systems make news all over the world. It is quite clear to me that every home in the world needs its own drinking water purification system. What you don't see can damage your health and even kill you. There is no way to be truly sure that what you are about to drink is clean and pure just by looking at it.

If you rely on the public drinking water treatment systems to protect your health, then you are making a big mistake. If you have a family, you are putting their present and future health at risk.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

Many people are aware of the risks, or at least the unpleasant taste, so instead of purchasing an economical drinking water purification system for their home, they buy bottled. The bottles are causing further pollution to the environment and there is no guarantee of safety.

If you choose to buy bottled, you should call up the company and ask them what drinking water purification system that they use. If they hesitate, then you might want to switch to a different brand. The bottling company may be relying on the efforts made by their local drinking water treatment systems. They are not required to provide something safer than tap-water, only something that is equivalent.

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration governs the bottled waters industry. They say that it is only practically to assume that a bottle may contain a variety of impurities including traces of E coli.

In that respect, you are better off sticking with what the drinking water treatment systems provide to your home, because they are not allowed to send out anything that is contaminated with E-coli. If there was some kind of problem at the facility, they are required to inform their customers.

But, they are not required to test for or remove cryptosporidium cysts. Some do. Others do not. Cryptosporidium cysts can make you just as ill as E-coli. During an outbreak in Milwaukee, over 100 died from cryptosporidiosis, the disease caused by the cyst. Subsequently, the city's drinking water treatment systems were changed and one facility was closed.

Accidents happen, but there is no reason to risk being exposed to an accident that could kill you. You buy car insurance. You have health insurance. A home drinking water purification system is inexpensive by comparison. It is far less expensive than buying bottled.

If you have the right drinking water purification system in your home, you can remove cryptosporidium cysts; chlorine, its cancer causing by-products, the toxic metal lead, herbicides, pesticides and a variety of other chemicals that might not kill you quickly, but are likely to cause you health problems down the road.

The only thing that a good point of use drinking water purification system will not remove is E-coli. If you are warned of E-coli contamination, you should filter first and then boil. Please, stop relying on the municipal drinking water treatment systems to completely protect your health. Do it yourself.

Drinking Water Filters - How They Compare in Effectiveness, Required Maintenance, Speed and Cost

In this article, we will look at reverse osmosis, distillation and multi-media block filter systems. You will discover drinking water filters vary widely in effectiveness, required maintenance, speed of filtering, and cost per gallon of filtered water produced. You will also acquire the information you need to choose the best drinking water filter system for your family.

In my opinion, you can pick any of the drinking water filters, outside of your own body, and it is a good one. But some are much better than others.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

First, let's look at the reverse osmosis (RO) system.

This system works by forcing water, under pressure, against a semi-permeable membrane which will remove any particles larger than a water molecule. At this stage the RO filter is really just an inefficient, costly pre-filter because:

1. RO systems won't remove chlorine, pesticides or many other toxic synthetic organic chemicals, whose molecular size is smaller than water's so they must be use in conjunction with carbon filters.
2. Even under the required water pressure, two-thirds or more of the water molecules cannot be forced through the membrane and go down the drain as wasted water.
3. RO systems are slow, yielding less than one gallon per hour of filtered water and, consequently, they require a storage tank to give an adequate supply of water.
4. The membrane in the filter will remove metals such as lead, but it also removes minerals our bodies need such as calcium, potassium and magnesium making the water acidic which some health officials consider "unhealthy" water.

The RO system requires considerable maintenance and produces comparatively expensive water at about 18 to 24 cents per gallon.

Next up is the distillation system (D)

Distillation is similar to nature's recycling system. In nature the sun heats the water; it evaporates and rises to the upper atmosphere, condenses in the cooler air and falls as rain.

In the D system, water is passed over a heated coil, the steam rises, goes into a cooling chamber (where the contaminants remain), and condenses back to a liquid.

This system is very effective against bacteria. Any bugs chlorine might have missed such as cysts like Cryptosporidium and Giardia (bad bugs), will be zapped by distillation.

And, yes, the D system will get the lead out, but, like the RO system, it removes the healthful trace minerals as well.

Again, like the RO system, chlorine and other toxic chemicals sneak by because they vaporize at a lower temperature than water, go up into the cooling chamber, condense and return with the water. Also, like the RO systems, D systems must be used in conjunction with a carbon filter.

Distillation, like reverse osmosis, is slow and wasteful, wasting up to 80 percent of the water used. Distillation produces filtered water at a cost of 20 to 26 cents per gallon.

Lastly, let's look at multi-media block filters.

In the earlier version of these filters, water was simply forced through a cylinder filled with granular activated charcoal (GAC), or carbon. Activated charcoal was used because it was recognized by the EPA as the best filtering media for removing chlorine, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) and synthetic organic chemicals (SOCs).

However, these first systems had a tendency to:

1. Allow some water to flow between the filter's walls and the carbon, so, not all the water was filtered and,
2. There was some concern about these filters not being capable of removing the tiny microbes such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia, or the more difficult to remove chemical compounds.

Both of these issues were resolved with the introduction of multi-media block filter technology.

This technology utilized the advantages of the activated carbon by making it a part of a blended filter media with a sub-micron structure that is extruded or formed into a solid block.

This multi-media block filter system:

1. Removes VOCs and SOCs, which, by the way, make up most of our pharmaceuticals and prescription drugs, herbicides, pesticides, etc. that are increasingly appearing in our water systems, and,
2. Removes the tiny microbes and the more difficult to remove chemical compounds and,
3. The solid block construction prevents the water from channeling around the filter media.

Multi-media block filtration systems have now come to the forefront of drinking water filter technology.

These filters work simply, (no pumps or storage tanks are required). They are efficient, quick and very economical, producing a steady supply of good, safe water for less than 10 cents a gallon.

In my opinion, they are by far the best choice of the home drinking water filters.

Trihalomethanes Contaminants in Drinking Water

All drinking water including bottled water contains a certain amount of chemicals. At this point it is almost unavoidable. There are currently standards for 90 of these contaminants although there could be many more than that. One of these contaminants is called trihalomethanes, or THM's they are a chemical compound comprised of four chemicals that are found in drinking water that has been treated with chlorine. They are considered 'by-products' of the chemical treatment process. They are caused when chlorine bonds with natural organic or in-organic matter in water systems. Trihalomethanes are known to cause dangerous side effects to the human body. Not only can these be ingested from drinking water, but also inhaled while bathing and from swimming in water that has been treated with chlorine.

Chlorine is used to treat drinking water because of its proven ability to kill dangerous pathogens found in water naturally, including diseases like cholera and dysentery. Government associations believe that the overall risks are not that high, maintaining that it would take decades of exposure to cause any real health risks.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

Risks

The government has limits on the amount of Trihalomethanes that can be found in water systems. Currently the Environmental Protection Agency or EPA regulates trihalomethanes at an annual average level of 80 parts per billion, for large drinking water systems, small drinking water systems and all ground water systems. Local governments set these limits and every area is different. It is not believed that the amount inhaled from showering is harmful, but swimming poses a greater risk. Chlorine or trihalomethanes can be absorbed through the skin, giving higher levels of contamination especially in children.

Trihalomethanes are carcinogens, also referred to as organochlorides. This type of chemical does not degrade or get digested. Your body will store it in your fat tissues. They have been found to secrete through breast milk, blood and semen. These types of carcinogens have been shown to cause DNA mutations, interfere with the immune system and cell growth. Trihalomethanes are known to cause rectal, bladder and breast cancers. There is a higher risk of asthma when exposed to trihalomethanes as well as eczema, and eroding dental enamel. They are also proven to cause a higher rate of miscarriage and birth defects.

Avoiding the Risk

The good news is that trihalomethanes can be avoided. Using an activated carbon filter will remove them from drinking water. Many health care professionals feel that a whole house water filtration system is the best way to avoid interaction with these harmful carcinogens. But there are less expensive options as well. These compounds are volatile and leaving them in a water jug in the fridge for twenty four hours will cause most of the trihalomethanes to leave the water. Reverse osmosis filtration systems do not remove these chemicals.

5 Big Reasons Why You Should Use Drinking Water Filters

Do you know why you should use water filters? And furthermore do you know what water filters you should use? Take two minutes and find out how to safeguard your family.

(1) The best drinking water filters provide us with the best quality water we can get. The best drinking water filter can improve our life, enhance our performance and increase our energy levels by providing what our bodies crave...99.99% pure drinking water.

WATER SOFTENER COMPARISON

70% of our body weight is water. We have to replace and replenish that water on a regular basis or face illness. Each person should consume gallons of water every day, but many do not, because their water doesn't taste fresh or it smells like chlorine. Good water filters will put the joy back into drinking water.

(2) Pure water is important in more ways than one, the water that we take in may contain bacteria that can cause diarrhea, which can be life threatening to small children, the elderly and anyone with a compromised immune system. Chlorine is added to the water at the treatment facility to remove bacteria...to disinfect the water.

But, some bacteria are resistant to chlorine. Cryptosporidium cysts, for example, are not killed by chlorine. Only a water filter with a micron particle stage can stop cryptosporidium at the cyst stage and protect your family's health.

(3) The average drinking water filter is carbon based. Carbon activated drinking water filters remove chlorine and chemicals, but other stages are needed to remove different things. It all really depends on what's in your water and without laboratory testing, the only safe thing to do is buy a water filter that can address all of the problems that "could" be in your water.

(4) Some drinking water filters (like reverse osmosis and distillation) remove trace minerals that are good for your health. The best drinking water filters "balance" the mineral content, instead. So, in areas where high mineral content or "hard" water is a problem, hard minerals are replaced with "softer minerals". A water filter that has a ion exchange stage is the right choice for well balanced mineral content.

Drinking water filters have been around for a long time. In India they had a crude drinking water filter that was used for ages. It consisted of a big round clay pot. The impurities would be absorbed by the clay and the remaining water tasted sweet and refreshing. With modern science we have perfected the technology and now can filter a number of things that are not good for us, but some water filters are stuck in the dark ages.

(5) Chlorine removal is just one thing that a water filter can do to improve our water. Some companies stop there. Other water filters go the extra mile by reducing harmful pollutants like pesticides and herbicides. Remember, anything that goes down the drain or on the ground eventually ends up in the ground water and our drinking water reservoirs

We use thousands of chemicals every day, thoughtlessly. Industries have spills, as do gas stations and repair shops. We have our grass treated with pesticides. We use herbicides to kill weeds. We wash medicines down the drain. All of this stuff ends up in the water.

It is important to be careful about what you flush down the drain or pour on the ground, but you have to realize that other people may not be so careful. The only way to protect your family is by investing in good drinking water filters for every tap in the house.
