"Heavy water filter" is a general term for a filter that can remove heavy particles from your supply of water, particles such as silt and sand, pieces of rust and modicums of dirt, tiny stones and crumbs of sediment. Large particles such as these can build up in your pipes over the years, and sometimes in your water heaters and water softeners. They can also get dislodged and enter your drinking water at any time. Sometimes a sudden rush of water-which happens when a fire hydrant on your street is activated, for example-causes pressure that shakes heavy particles loose from the pipes. And once you drink these particles down and they're inside your body, they will get lodged somewhere, often alongside your muscles and joints, or inside your blood vessels, and they don't go anywhere. They stay put and they build up over time, causing inflammation and wear and tear, and sometimes more serious afflictions like heart disease. Heavy water filters can also be used in swimming pools and hot tubs and whirlpools, cleansing the water of large particles and thus making the water much easier on your skin and hair. (For this reason, spas and health clubs often use heavy water filters.) These filters are also good for people who have private wells or who live on farms, as soil and dirt and other materials common to the ground can easily seep into drinking water supplies.
